As you start your design, the question to ask is who do you want to attract to your website. Don’t assume that these are the people visiting unless you know that.
Think about some common traits your target market might have. Who is your customer or visitor? Some easy traits include age, sex, occupation, & hobbies. What’s important to them.
Can you put your visitors easily in buckets – to classify them? While you may have one large bucket, more likely it will be a couple buckets.
Once you know who you want to visit, work with your marketing and web team to determine the best way to entice them to your site. Things like colors, fonts, & layout will help to create an appealing look and feel of the site and will vary with your target. What appeals to my 21 year old son isn’t necessarily my preference. Our homes, cars, etc look very different. Choice of content will also vary depending on the needs of your targets. That’s why this conversation should start early. It’s all about them!
If you say, but that’s marketing… EXACTLY! Blog, e-commerce or medical practice… it doesn’t matter who you are, it’s all about the marketing.
When all is said & done, your goal is to make it as easy as possible for your visitors (customers) to find you, buy from you & come back again.
From the start, consider who your target, your audience, your customer is.
